Cultural Identity Integration in AI-Enhanced Language Teaching: A Case Study of Basilan State College
This qualitative case study investigates the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in language teaching while preserving cultural identity at Basilan State College in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, Philippines. Set in a linguistically diverse environment where Yakan, Tausug, Chavacano, Cebuano, Filipino, Arabic, and English coexist, the research examines how language educators navigate the tension between technological innovation and cultural preservation. Through semi-structured interviews with 8 language instructors, 5 students, and 2 administrators, classroom observations, document analysis, and focus group discussions, the study identifies four major themes: navigating cultural representation in AI content, adapting AI tools for local contexts, leveraging AI to enhance cultural expression, and addressing challenges in balancing technology with tradition. The findings reveal that educators function as critical cultural mediators who adapt general-purpose AI technologies to serve locally meaningful educational goals. The research demonstrates that AI tools, when thoughtfully implemented, can enhance language teaching while supporting cultural identity by creating personalized learning experiences with culturally relevant references, providing opportunities for cultural expression, and offering technological solutions to document local linguistic knowledge.
