The Impact of Teamwork and Communication on Patient Safety in Healthcare Settings in the KSA: A Quantitative Analysis
Patient safety is a cornerstone of healthcare quality, with teamwork and communication playing critical roles in ensuring safe and effective care. Ineffective teamwork and communication have been implicated in adverse events, while their enhancement has shown to reduce errors and foster a culture of safety. To quantitatively assess the relationship between teamwork, communication, and patient safety using standardized tools and metrics. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 400 healthcare professionals across diverse clinical settings. Data were collected using the TeamSTEPPS Teamwork Perceptions Questionnaire (T-TPQ), the Communication Climate Inventory (CCI), and patient safety metrics such as incident reporting rates and HCAHPS scores. Statistical analyses included descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and multiple regression modeling. Strong teamwork and communication scores were associated with significantly fewer safety incidents and higher patient satisfaction. Units in the top quartile of teamwork scores reported 3.2 incidents per 1,000 patient-days compared to 7.8 in the bottom quartile. Communication scores were the strongest predictor of patient satisfaction (β = 0.57, p < 0.001), while teamwork scores showed a stronger negative association with incident rates (β = -0.52, p < 0.001). Together, teamwork and communication explained 48% of the variance in incident rates and 56% in satisfaction scores. The study underscores the critical influence of teamwork and communication on patient safety and satisfaction. Investments in team-based training and structured communication strategies are essential to fostering a culture of safety and improving patient outcomes.
