The Influence of Carbon Compounds on Anaerobic Performance: Challenges & Perspectives
There are several organic and inorganic contaminants in wastewater, and dumping them into receiving waters has detrimental environmental effects. One of the biggest environmental issues affecting public health is the presence of toxins in the wastewater produced by numerous companies. Unfortunately, complete pollution removal is impossible using the traditional wastewater clean-up procedure. Anaerobic digestion removes the contaminant and recovers energy by treating the waste. The influence of carbon compounds on improving anaerobic systems has been researched previously. The classic theory regarding the toxicity of carbon compounds on aquatic microbes and the new "application of carbon compounds approach" for enhancing anaerobic performance was briefly reviewed in this work. In addition, recent developments in various carbon-based compounds and various wastewater pollutant removal methods have been examined, with some instances serving as a backdrop for further study. The challenges and need for additional research were noted to fully understand how the added carbon compounds interact with the substrates and microbes, and the effects of using these carbon compounds on large-scale applications. These carbon compounds can be effective substitutes for manmade materials when removing contaminants from wastewater.
