The Role of Interdisciplinary Teams in Improving Patient Care Quality
Interdisciplinary teams (IDTs) have gained widespread attention as a promising way to meet the growing complexities of modern patient care. This review synthesizes findings from 45 primary studies (2010–2023) to explore how IDTs impact clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction, and medical errors. Collectively, IDT interventions demonstrated a 25% reduction in hospital readmissions, a 20% decrease in length of stay (LOS), and a 30% drop in medical errors. Patient satisfaction increased by approximately 15%. Nevertheless, challenges persist, including communication breakdowns, role ambiguity, resource constraints, and cultural resistance. This review describes best practices for fostering effective IDTs, discusses how emerging technologies (e.g., AI, telehealth) may strengthen team-based approaches, and underscores the need for continued research on sustainability and cost-effectiveness.
